Langley for Families Foundation Donates over $290,000 in Third Giving Cycle of 2022
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – (December 12, 2022) – The Langley for Families Foundation (LFF) announced the grantees of its third and final giving cycle of 2022 – a total of $294,700 donated to 37 nonprofit organizations across the Greater Hampton Roads area.
All grant awards focus on the Foundation’s three core program areas – access to education; housing & human services; and healthcare. The Foundation’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of families in all of the communities Langley serves, with an emphasis on providing basic needs to those who need us most.
Nonprofits across the board have experienced significant challenges as a result of inflation over the course of 2022 with many organizations seeing an increased need for their services as well as an increased cost to provide those services. This support will enable some of the most impactful nonprofit organizations in the communities that Langley Federal Credit Union serves to expand their capacity, ensuring resources and services are available for households struggling to make ends meet.
THRIVE Peninsula is one of the organizations receiving $15,000 from the Foundation this cycle in support of their backbone program: Building Financial Foundations (BFF). Each family served through BFF receive individualized financial coaching and a week’s worth of groceries from THRIVE’s Food Market. “Between January-October 2022, we have received nearly twice as many applications as we received last year,” shared Angela York, Executive Director of THRIVE Peninsula. “Even though we have distributed nearly $500,000 through this program already in 2022, the most in our history, we have only been able to assist 10% of applicants due to this significant spike in need. The funding from Langley for Families will allow THRIVE to serve an additional 25-30 families with children, helping a total of 50-75 people.”
Grove Christian Outreach Center, another $15,000 grant recipient, will be receiving funding in support of their Food Distribution Program which serves thousands of residents experiencing food insecurity in James City County. “The amount of food that has been available and coming in through community food drives has steadily been on the decline over the past year,” shared Grove Christian Outreach Center’s Executive Director, Katie Patrick, “This, coupled with an increase in the number of families seeking assistance as well as in increase in the number of visits, has left the Outreach Center spending more on direct purchases than ever before. This funding will ensure our food pantry shelves have a steady supply of much needed food items for the families we serve.”
In addition, the Langley for Families Foundation supported several organizations serving people experiencing homelessness who are expecting an increased need for their shelter services with the winter months ahead. This includes $12,000 in support of Hampton Ecumenical Lodging And Provisions’ (HELP’s) winter shelter program and $10,000 supporting Gloucester United Emergency Shelter Team’s (GUEST’s) emergency shelter operations.
Funds are raised from the generosity of Langley members, employees, partners, and the Hampton Roads community. The significant funding distributed in this cycle was a result of the Foundation’s top two fundraising initiatives: the first being the success of the 2022 Charity Golf Classic which raised over $520,000 in gross profits, and the second being the combined proceeds of the monthly charitable cash raffles.
The Langley for Families Foundation will host a total of three giving cycles again in 2023, with the deadline for applications for the first cycle of the year due on March 31, 2023.
