NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – (December 19, 2023) – The Langley for Families Foundation (LFF) announced the grantees of its third giving cycle of 2023 – a total of $232,700 donated to 25 nonprofit organizations across the Greater Hampton Roads area.

All grant awards focus on the Foundation’s three core program areas – access to education, healthcare, and housing & human services. The Foundation’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of families in all of the communities Langley serves, with an emphasis on providing basic needs to households struggling to make ends meet.

Thanks to the generosity of Langley members, employees, partners, and the Hampton Roads community, LFF was able to increase the amount granted to nonprofit organizations whose programs are bridging gaps in resources in underserved communities, with fifteen of the twenty five grants distributed in the amount of $10,000 or more.

In addition, LFF is pleased to announce a $50,000 pledge in support of THRIVE Peninsula’s capital campaign for “The Market at THRIVE” with $25,000 awarded this grant cycle and $25,000 to be granted to the organization in 2024. The Market at THRIVE is a free grocery store in Newport News that is expected to increase THRIVE Peninsula’s service capacity from 18,000 to more than 30,000 residents served annually. “Recognizing that stigma often prevents families from seeking assistance at traditional food pantries, The Market at THRIVE is a dignified space where people can obtain food without feeling ashamed or judged,” shared THRIVE Peninsula’s Executive Director, Angela York. “We moved into this new building to bring our dream of a free grocery store to reality and to meet the rising needs of our community. We believe that everyone deserves access to enough nutritious food options, regardless of their financial situation.”

“The Langley for Families Foundation understands what an impactful resource The Market at THRIVE will be to many families in need, and appreciates the work that THRIVE Peninsula has dedicated to address this important need in our community,” shared Jerome Fowlkes, CHRO of Langley Federal Credit Union and Board Member of the Langley for Families Foundation. “We appreciate THRIVE Peninsula and all Langley for Families nonprofit grant recipients who are working diligently to ensure resources and services are available for our neighbors in need, and we encourage everyone to keep families experiencing poverty in the forefront of your thoughts over the course of the holiday season.”

The Langley for Families Foundation will host a total of three giving cycles again in 2024, with the deadline for applications for the first cycle of the year due on March 22, 2024.
