Langley’s 2025 Day of Service
Langley Federal Credit Union employees, friends, and family members honored Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life of service on January 20, 2024 by volunteering at nonprofit organizations across the communities Langley serves. A total of 182 volunteers completed 14 projects, taking on service projects in Hampton Roads, Raleigh, and Richmond.
Over the course of the day, Langley volunteers:
- Sorted and packed food and household supplies at the Foodbank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in Raleigh
- Loaded boxes of food, sorted through donations, and packed fresh produce at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore in Norfolk
- Wiped down the walls, folded and stored laundry, cleaned the cat malls, and replenished litter and food, at the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society in Gloucester. Volunteers also organized the garage to create space for a newly acquired x-ray machine, ensuring the equipment has a designated, functional area.
- Painted 9 offices at the Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic in Gloucester
- Sorted through and stored 228 lbs of donated supplies, organized over 100 administrative files, bagged 500 pieces of produce, divided 600 diapers into small packs for distribution, and served over 200 individuals at the free grocery market of Grove Christian Outreach Center.
- Sorted and organized donations that will support people experiencing homelessness at the Helping the Homeless thrift store in Gloucester
- Enhanced the overall aesthetic of LGBT Life Center‘s headquarters in Norfolk by completing a comprehensive painting project which included painting the 14,189 square foot lobby and hallways on the ground floor and completing touch-up work on another 14,189 square feet of office space on the second floor
- Meal prepped, cooked, and served 145 meals to our neighbors in need at So All May Eat (SAME) at Hampton Baptist Church.
- Organized two storage and supplies closets, reorganized toys in the teen room, and sorted through the donations made throughout the day at The Samaritan House in Virginia Beach. Volunteers also repainted all 25 silhouettes the organization uses during their silent witness events which share the stories of domestic violence victims
- Assembled and decorated 60 Literacy Kits at United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg to be distributed to elementary students in Richmond to support literacy programs
- Assembled 163 cutting knives for various entities served by Valhalla’s Forge in Virginia Beach including first responders, Boy Scouts, wounded warriors’ events, and veterans in retirement homes.
- Cleaned the interior of 9 utility service vehicles, 6 physical therapy rooms, 4 arts and crafts areas, and swept and mopped all floors of VersAbility’s Resources community living center for individuals with disabilities in Newport News. Volunteers also created a board dedicated to MLK Jr. for display in the homes for the remainder of the month
- Assisted in assembling a traveling exhibit, Ocean Bound, at the Virginia Living Museum that will educate thousands of community members and visitors
- Assembled, packed, loaded, and palletized around 520 boxes of food for use at senior home sites at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank in Hampton. Volunteers also bagged seasonal produce into boxes for pallets which will be distributed to hundreds of individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.
